Weathering Effects on Degradation of Low-Density Polyethylene-Nanosilica Composite with Added Pro-oxidant

Published by U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD) | U.S. Environmental Protection Agency | Metadata Last Checked: June 27, 2025 | Last Modified: 2018-08-13
Nanomaterials are increasingly used in polymer composites to enhance the properties of these materials. Data are presented from a study of sunlight-induced weathering on potential release of nanosilica from a composite with low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Weathering of the composites was determined by quantifying changes in infrared spectroscopic properties (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy / FTIR); mechanical properties, atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy and other procedures.
