Wake Atoll Biosecurity Shipping Container Grow-Out Experiment Plant Species, 2020-2021

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: September 05, 2025 | Last Modified: 20250616
During 2018, USGS staff collected debris from the floors of 30 shipping containers located in Honolulu on the island of Oʻahu and destined for Wake Atoll as part of a study to understand biosecurity risks associated with overseas transport. The debris was sown in grow-out trays and monitored for plant germination for seven months in 2020-2021. This dataset is a list of plant species that germinated from the container debris during a grow-out experiment that took place over those seven months. The dataset includes plant scientific names, plant families, plant groups (monocot, dicot, fern), plant common names, and whether the species was encountered during a 2019 survey of plants at Wake Atoll. This list of species includes plants identified within grow-out trays and outside the grow-out trays in the surrounding area of the greenhouse.
