Structure-from-Motion derived point clouds and orthomosaic images of reference sections of the upper part of the Lockhaven Formation near Tioga, Pennsylvania

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: August 06, 2025 | Last Modified: 20250306
This dataset consists of Structure-from-Motion derived point clouds and detailed orthomosaic images of two exposures covering the upper part of the Lockhaven Formation near Tioga, Pennsylvania. For each roadcut exposure, two datasets are published: an orthomosaic raster image and a point cloud. The orthomosaic raster image is a vertical outcrop orthomosaic constructed from multiple orthophotos to create a geometrically rectified image. This facilitates a detailed visual inspection of the stratigraphic succession outside of a GIS environment, unlike georefrenced orthomosaics derived from aerial imagery. Point-cloud files provide 3D geospatial data that enables inspection in a three-dimensional geospatial environment. As a geospatial dataset, they can be combined with other reference geodatasets, enhancing analysis and application in geologic mapping.
