Santa Rosa Island Stream Survey

Published by National Park Service | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: June 25, 2025 | Last Modified: 2020-02-10
Hydrology survey conducted for the Santa Rosa Island, Channel Islands National Park, California. The majority of survey was conducted in September 2014. Several teams of two people manually mapped visible water throughout the island using consumer-grade Garmin GPS units. Section of visible water that were more than 10 meters were recorded with a start and end point. Those start and end points were then manually connected by following the path of a LiDAR-based stream bed line to result in a linear measurement of visible water. Resulting polyline dataset is the result of manually digitizing the survey start and stop points into measurable stream lengths. Additional surveys using the same technique were conducted in 2016 and 2017 to show fluctuations of visible water over time and different amounts of seasonal rainfall.
