Rare Earth Element data from Acid Mine Drainage and Refuse Piles in Shamokin, Pennsylvania
These datasets include characterization results for acid mine drainage (AMD) and coal refuse samples collected around Shamokin, Pennsylvania in May 2024. These datasets report concentrations of Critical Minerals/Rare Earth Elements (CM/REE) in fourteen water samples and fourteen sediment/solid samples. Water samples were collected unfiltered and field-filtered (0.45-micron pore size) in order to evaluate the potential partitioning of CM/REE to suspended solids in AMD waters. The concentration data were determined using High Resolution-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass spectrometry following EPA/ORD-K-GCRD-SOP-1158-1 (EPA/600/X-24/012). This sampling and analytical effort builds upon past sampling events in the area by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP). These datasets are of interest to CM/REE researchers as well as neighboring communities for understanding and evaluating the presence and abundance of CM/REEs in both acid mine drainage media and coal mine wastes.
