Point cloud of historic Ellicott City, Maryland after the 2018 flood (LAZ file)
Digital imagery was obtained by Elevated Media Concepts LLC from small unmanned aerial systems (UAS), over historic Ellicott City on June 18, 2018 after major flooding events. These images were collected to document and monitor effects of flooding, including property damage and erosion in Ellicott City, Maryland. A DJI Inspire 2 quadcopter with camera model FC6520 and a DJI Mavic Pro quadcopter with camera model FC220 were the UAS used to capture these images, while the image locations were determined by the UAS GPS. A field crew surveyed the area with a high-precision Real Time Kinematic Global Position System to establish ground control points (GCP's). Low altitude UAS imagery and GCPs were joined with structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry to produce high resolution datasets, exploring a cost-effective alternative to lidar and satellite imagery. Images, image locations, and GCPs were processed in an SfM workflow to produce an elevation point cloud dataset. An orthomosaic image and digital surface model (DSM) were also developed from the elevation point cloud.
