Patent AT-E401824-T1: [Translated] METHOD AND DEVICE FOR SYNCHRONIZING BREATHING GAS MEASUREMENTS

Published by National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) | U.S. Department of Health & Human Services | Metadata Last Checked: September 06, 2025 | Last Modified: 2025-09-06
A method and apparatus for determining the transit time of a breathing gas sample in a sampling line. The flow of the breathing gas sample in the gas sampling line is stopped when breathing gases are flowing in a first direction in a breathing gas passage for a subject and the breathing gases exhibit a gas concentration that is characteristic of that breathing gas flow direction. Thereafter, the flow direction of the breathing gases in the breathing gas passage is allowed to reverse to a second direction and the gas concentration characteristic allowed to change to that of the second flow direction. The flow of sampling breathing gases is then resumed. This starts a boundary or front between breathing gases exhibiting the concentration characteristic of the first flow direction and those exhibiting the concentration characteristic for the second flow direction moving along the sampling line from the entry of the sampling line toward a gas concentration sensor. A transit time timing interval is initiated when the flow of the breathing gas sample is resumed. A gas concentration in the breathing gas sample is sensed by a breathing gas concentration sensor and the timing interval is terminated when the gas concentration sensor senses the alteration from the gas concentration characterizing the first breathing gas flow direction to the gas concentration characterizing the second breathing gas flow direction. <IMAGE>
