Long-term vertical water temperature observations in the deepest area of Lake Michigan's southern basin

Published by NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information | National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce | Metadata Last Checked: October 13, 2025 | Last Modified: 2023-07-28T00:00:00.000+00:00
Long-term, year-around vertical water temperature observations in the southern basin of Lake Michigan from a fixed mooring. Observations were collected from the deepest location in the southern basin of Lake Michigan, which is approximately 155 m. The mooring deployments were retrieved and replaced with a new set of thermistors annually, which causes the depth of temperature observation to vary between deployments. The temperature observations were collected as continuously as possible over the period of record, though there are some breaks in the temporal collection for maintaining equipment annually or due to loss of equipment. These observations were collected to understand the vertical thermal structure in the deep waters of Lake Michigan.
