Iowa Child Abuse Occurrences by Year, County and Type of Abuse

Published by data.iowa.gov | State of Iowa | Metadata Last Checked: June 26, 2025 | Last Modified: 2024-05-28
This dataset summarizes occurrences of abuse by type identified during child welfare assessments conducted by DHS with "founded" or "confirmed" findings beginning January 1, 2004. “Founded” means abuse occurred and resulted in perpetrator placement on the child abuse registry. "Confirmed” means abuse occurred, but it was minor, isolated and not likely to reoccur, and perpetrator was not placed on the central abuse registry. Data is grouped by calendar year, county and type of abuse. For each child included in the assessment, up to 10 types of abuse may be indicated. Each child may be confirmed of multiple types of abuse on a single assessment, and may have multiple assessments. The county is determined according to the child's county of residence at time of the assessment.
