International Ice Patrol Annual North Atlantic Iceberg Summaries and Reports, Version 1

Published by NSIDC | National Aeronautics and Space Administration | Metadata Last Checked: September 14, 2025 | Last Modified: 2025-09-11
The International Ice Patrol (IIP) has been monitoring iceberg activity in the North Atlantic since 1913. This data set contains yearly summaries and reports of these iceberg sightings beginning in 2024 for the IIP's Area of Responsibility (AOR) in the North Atlantic (40° N to 60° N, 40° W to 60° W) during the iceberg season. The iceberg season runs from 1 October of one year to 30 September of the next year. Each year contains two files: a one page summary PDF and full iceberg season PDF report. The summary provides a concise graphical overview. Each year’s iceberg season severity is ranked as light, moderate, severe, or extreme, and given historical context in a graph of annual severity beginning in 1900. The summary also includes a monthly graph of the year’s number of icebergs estimated crossing south of 48° N, along with the climatological average.

To access older IIP iceberg reports visit the U.S. Coast Guard's International Ice Patrol Annual Reports web page.

To access the data that was used to produce these reports, see the following data sets at NSIDC:

International Ice Patrol (IIP) Iceberg Sightings Database

International Ice Patrol Annual Count of Icebergs South of 48 Degrees North, 1900 to Present

International Ice Patrol Iceberg Drift Tracks
