Hydroacoustic Water Velocity Data to Support Embayment Monitoring in Long Island Sound, Mystic, Norwalk, Saugatuck, and Sasco-Southport Embayments, Connecticut, 2021-2024

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: August 25, 2025 | Last Modified: 20250516
This data release includes hydroacoustic transect data collected in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 water years at multiple locations throughout four embayments. These locations are part of a discrete and continuous monitoring project in embayments on Long Island Sound to support nutrient management activities in Connecticut. The transect data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The transect data were collected using acoustic Doppler currents profilers (ADCPs). ADCP transect data containing measurement location, time, velocity, depth and other parameters in ASCII formatted '.txt' files are provided for each embayment in a 'zip' file, organized by river embayment, then sub-location, then by date. Raw measurement files were also included with each date folder. Each 'zip' file includes a '.txt' file ("READMEforMYSTIC.txt", for example) describing when and where data were collected, the ADCP unit used and its transducer depth offset setting, tide cycle conditions, time of data collection, number of transects collected, GPS data availability, and salinity settings. A second '.txt' file ("READMEforTXT.txt") is included describing the structure of the ASCII formatted transect data.
