Great Smoky Mountains National Park Sochan Monitoring Database

Published by National Park Service | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: June 25, 2025 | Last Modified: 2020-10-29
This database includes monitoring and occurrence data for Rudbeckia laciniata var. laciniata (“sochan” or “cutleaf coneflower”) throughout the park. The sochan monitoring program began in 2019 following the approval of the sochan Gathering Program which allows for the gathering of sochan for traditional cultural purposes by permitted members of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians (EBCI). This program is authorized under Title 36 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 2.6, Gathering of Certain Plants or Plant Parts by Federally Recognized Indian Tribes for Traditional Purposes. Over the course of 2019-2020, 16 monitoring plots (9 harvest monitoring, 7 non-harvested control) were installed and surveyed. Data was collected in the spring and late summer of 2019, and again in the late summer of 2020. Additionally, GPS data were collected for sochan observations throughout the park and used to inform a maximum entropy (MaxEnt) habitat prediction model.
