Forecast products and associated satellite imagery from the Florida and Texas regions created by the NOAA Harmful Algal Bloom Operational Forecast System (HAB-OFS) from 2004-01-12 to present

Published by NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information | National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce | Metadata Last Checked: October 04, 2025 | Last Modified: 2025-03-04T00:00:00.000+00:00
This collection contains outputs from the NOAA Harmful Algal Bloom Operational Forecast System (HAB-OFS) for the Florida and Texas regions. The Operational HAB-OFS output began in 2004, updated in 2022, and is still in production. The current forecast products include beach-level respiratory irritation forecasts based on the analysis of information from data providers, 8-day composite satellite imagery showing bloom extent, field observations, and a bloom intensification forecast in the form of GeoTIFF and comma-separated files. The forecast products are updated throughout the day as source data becomes available and accessible via the Florida and Texas HAB forecast web pages. The previous version (2004-2021) of the forecast contained an analysis of ocean color satellite imagery, field observations, models, public health reports and buoy data and forecasts of potential HAB transport, intensification and associated respiratory irritation based on the analysis of information from data providers. Prior to 2004, the HAB-OFS output for the Florida and Texas regions were considered to be experimental. This program was operated experimentally from 2000 to 2003. These data are also available at the NCEI archive.
