Dataset of magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements from the Monument dike swarm in Central Oregon, USA

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: August 06, 2025 | Last Modified: 20250312
We measured the magnetic fabric of 205 oriented paleomagnetic specimens, subsampled from 97 samples collected from 15 dikes of the Monument dike swarm. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility is the directionally dependent response of a specimen to an induced magnetization and is a function of the magnetic mineral properties (e.g., size, shape, mineralogy, domain state, orientation). We perform a stepwise thermal demagnetization of the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) for a single, typical specimen from each site. We perform a hysteresis measurement for a single, typical specimen from each site by applying an external magnetic field and measuring the magnetization of the specimen in response.
