Data on factors affecting reproductive success of feral horse males from Conger and Frisco Herd Management Areas, UT, USA, between 2017 and 2020

We investigated male reproductive success of feral horses (Equus caballus) at Conger and Frisco Herd Management Areas (HMAs) in Utah, USA between 2017 and 2020. We collected data on male social status (harem stallion, lieutenant, tag, bachelor or in natal group) and group type (single male or multi-male) at both sites, and at Conger we additionally examined social interactions among males and between males and females. We focused behavioral data collection on a subset of telemetered individuals (“focal individuals”) plus their social affiliates.We aimed to obtain at least one hour of observation on each focal individual and its social group at least twice a month in each of three time periods (0700–1100, 1100–1600, 1600–2000) between April and September at Conger HMA. Behavior data were not collected at Frisco HMA. This dataset includes behavior of adult horses, so only includes data on animals known or assumed to be 2 years of age or older. Group composition data was collected year-round, but behavior data was only collected between March and September 2017-2020.
