Daily ice cover fractions for 107,257 lakes in the Northern Hemisphere

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: August 06, 2025 | Last Modified: 20250310
This dataset provides estimated daily ice cover fractions for 107,257 lakes across the Northern Hemisphere from 1980 to 2022. The ice cover fractions were generated using a deep learning model trained on Landsat observations. The model's code is publicly available in the USGS GitLab repository: https://doi.org/10.5066/P13ZGUGE. The dataset consists of 42 CSV files, each corresponding to a single year. Each file contains daily ice cover fraction estimates for all lakes in that year and follows a consistent format. To facilitate data use, we created three descriptive tables of the dataset: 1) A_Dictionary_file_list.csv: Provides a description of each annual CSV file. 2) B_Dictionary_each_file.csv: Documents the structure and format shared by all CSV files. 3) C_List_of_lakes.csv: Lists lake IDs based on the HydroLAKES dataset (https://www.hydrosheds.org/products/hydrolakes). Users may consider regrouping the dataset by lake instead of year after it is downloaded for simpler data analysis.
