Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide, version 4, collection of marine animal images from seafloor video collected by the remotely operated vehicle Deep Discoverer in the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and South Pacific Oceans from 2 Aug 2015 to 14 Sept 2019 (NCEI Accession 0283261)
The Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide is a collection of in situ images of marine animals created from seafloor video taken by NOAA Ocean Exploration in the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and South Pacific Oceans from 2 Aug 2015 to 14 Sept 2019. Video were collected using the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Deep Discover (D2) deployed from the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer. The purpose of this guide is to aid onboard scientists in animal identification, as well as for public interest. It provides the location, depth, and identity of the observed seafloor animals and is organized into major taxonomic groups. Animal identifications were made with assistance from national and international taxonomic experts who specialize in deep water animals. The images are high-resolution .jpg files and corresponding low-resolution (thumbnail) .jpg files organized into Atlantic and Pacific folders. The guide can be accessed through the NOAA Ocean Exploration web site (https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/okeanos/animal_guide/animal_guide.html).
