Acoustic Doppler Current profiler (ADCP) field measurements of flow velocity and discharge from the Middle Channel of the St. Clair River delta, Michigan, collected May 2-4, 2022
Field measurements of flow velocity and discharge were acquired from the Middle Channel of the St. Clair River delta, Michigan, May 2-4, 2022. The velocity and discharge measurements included in this data release were obtained using a SonTek M9 acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) deployed from a boat with an outboard motor. River Surveyor Live software version 4.1. was used to acquire and store the ADCP files. The ADCP data were collected along 8 transects spanning the width of the Middle Channel; two passes across the channel were made at each transect. This data release provides text files derived from the raw ADCP data files using the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (VMT) software version 4.09. Text files with projected spatial coordinates, velocity components, and depth-averaged velocity magnitudes, were generated. The spatial location of each measurement was obtained using a Trimble 540AP Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver and real time network (RTN). The map projection and datum for these data are UTM Zone 17 N and NAD 83, respectively. This data release consists of a series comma-delimited (*.csv) text files. Each file consists of five columns: UTM_Easting, in meters, UTM_Northing, in meters, EastDAV, in m/s, and NorthDAV, in m/s and Velocity magnitude, in m/s. The first two columns are the easting and northing spatial coordinates, respectively. The third and fourth columns are the easting and northing components of the depth-averaged velocity magnitude in meters per second. The fifth column is the velocity magnitude in meters per second. An additional text file is included that provides the average discharge at the cross-section or mean of the two ADCP passes made at each transect. This field-based data set was used to determine the discharge of the Middle Channel of the St. Clair River delta and to provide depth-averaged velocities to inform hydraulic models.
